Overview Fayette is a town in north-central Seneca County, bordered to the north by Waterloo and Seneca Falls, to the east by Cayuga Lake, to the south by Varick and to the west by Seneca Lake. Like most towns in Seneca County, Fayette is located between two of the major Finger Lakes, so fishing, boating and other outdoor activities are paramount here. Fayette has no village but several hamlets, including Yost Corners, Canoga and Teall Beach. This is a small, quiet town with only about 3,500 residents and few attractions, but you’re close to busier communities like Waterloo and, in Ontario County, Geneva. Local Museums/Landmarks For a small town, Fayette has several notable historic properties. The Rose Hill Mansion, which overlooks Seneca Lake, is a National Historic Landmark. Sites listed on the National Register of Historic Places include the William Hoster House and the Christ Evangelical and Reformed Church. Peter Whitmer, a prominent early Mormon, lived in Fayette and the Peter Whitmer Log Home was rebuilt by the Church of Jesus Christ Latter Day Saints around 1980. (Mormon history is big in this region; church founder Joseph Smith was from nearby Palmyra.) The Fayette Historical Society operates out of a building on Route 414.

Essentials For grocery shopping, there’s a Tops Friendly Markets store on Kingdom Plaza in Waterloo, only 5 miles northeast of Fayette. The closest Wegmans supermarket is on Hamilton Street in Geneva, about 10 miles west. For retail shopping, Waterloo has a Walmart Supercenter and smaller stores like a Rite Aid pharmacy. Waterloo also has the popular and busy Waterloo Premium Outlets mall, with dozens of factory outlet stores like Ann Taylor and Brooks Brothers. Students who live here attend the Waterloo Central School District, which has one each primary, intermediate, middle and high school. The closest hospital is Geneva General in Geneva. The closest public libraries are in Waterloo, Geneva and Seneca Falls.

Sampson State Park, a former U.S. naval base, is just south in Romulus. Here, you’re in the heart of Finger Lakes Wine Country, and dozens of vineyards and wineries can be found all along the shoreline of both Seneca and Cayuga lakes. Other than outdoor activities, Fayette doesn’t have a lot of entertainment options, but there are plenty of things to do in Waterloo, Seneca Falls and, especially, in Geneva. Waterloo has the National Memorial Day Museum and Geneva has a movie theater multiplex, the Smith Opera House and other attractions.
