Welcome to Tyre, NY

Overview

Tyre is a town in the northeast corner of Seneca County, bordered to the north by Wayne County (towns of Galen and Savannah), to the east by Cayuga County (town of Montezuma), to the south by Seneca Falls and to the west by Junius. This is a small town of about 900 residents whose residents cherish the rural nature of Tyre, but things could be changing soon. Developers are proposing to build a huge, multi-million dollar casino in town, ostensibly to attractor visitors from throughout the Finger Lakes region. For now, though, the biggest attraction in Tyre is the Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge, where you can see migratory birds and other wildlife critters.

Essentials

Most shopping needs for Tyre residents can be met in the nearby towns of Seneca Falls (7 miles south) and in Waterloo (12 miles southwest). Seneca Falls has a vibrant assortment of retail shopping options, with smaller stores like Dollar Tree, a Nice n Easy Convenience Store, a Rite Aid pharmacy, Country Max, Seneca Farm and Home Supply, tailors and photography shops and more. For major retailers, there’s a Walmart on historic and scenic Routes 5 & 20. For more grocery shopping, Waterloo has a Top’s Friendly Markets store. The closest Wegmans supermarket is 17 miles east in Auburn (Cayuga County). Another Wegmans is 19 miles southwest in Geneva. Waterloo also is home to the enormous Waterloo Premium Outlet Mall, which has dozens of factory outlet stores that attract shoppers from all over.

Recreation & Entertainment

Again, the proposed casino – if it comes – will certainly be the biggest draw here. Cayuga Lake is enormously popular for boating, fishing, camping and other outdoor activities. Cayuga Lake State Park in Seneca Falls has a swimming beach, a boat launch and other attractions.

Transportation & Traffic

The always-busy New York State Thruway passes through the Montezuma Marsh in the northwest part of Tyre. Route 89 and Route 414 are north-south highways here, and Route 318 heads east-west.

Pros & Cons

If you like small towns with plenty of wide-open space, Tyre will be appealing. Nearby towns like Seneca Falls and Waterloo offer plenty of things to do and see, and Cayuga Lake is a quick drive south. How the proposed casino will affect the town – if, in fact, the casino is built – remains to be seen.
