Overview Varick is a town in central Seneca County, bordered to the north by Fayette, to the east by Cayuga Lake, to the south by Romulus, and to the west by Seneca Lake. As with many towns in Seneca County, Varick’s location between two of the larger Finger Lakes means this is a busy area for boating, fishing and wineries. There are about half a dozen wineries in Varick, and many more up and down the shorelines of both lakes. Varick is home to the former Seneca Army Depot, which was built during World War II and not shut down formally until 2000. The depot at one time was the largest employer in the area and now is leased to the Seneca County Economic Development Corp. Occupying more than 10,000 acres in Varick and neighboring Romulus, the depot is famously home to the world’s largest herd of white deer. Varick has no village but has several hamlets, and a cluster of homes are on East Lake Road. Several Mennonite and some Amish farmers live in this area. Local Museums/Landmarks The enormous Seneca Army Depot (now closed) is the major landmark in the area. The Simon Ritter Cobblestone Farmhouse is on the National Register of Historic Places.

Essentials For most shopping needs, you’ll have to travel to either Geneva (in Ontario County) or to Waterloo or Seneca Falls. Geneva (about 14 miles northwest) has a Wegmans supermarket, a Top’s Friendly Markets store, a busy downtown area with small shops, and a Walmart Supercenter. Waterloo (about 12 miles north) also has a Walmart and a Top’s. Students here attend the Romulus Central School District, which has one elementary school and one middle-high school. The closest hospital is Geneva General (in Geneva, naturally). The Waterloo Library covers residents in Varick.

Recreation & Entertainment Other than the natural beauty of Seneca and Cayuga lakes and nearby state parks, there are not a lot of things to see or do here. Varick is a town of fewer than 2,000 residents, and many here are involved in farming and wineries – this area is part of the well-known Finger Lakes Wine Trail. You’ll find dozens of wineries up and down both Seneca and Cayuga lakes. Seneca Lake is known as the “Lake Trout Fishing Capital of the World,” and lots of folks here are into fishing and boating. Nearby Geneva is your best bet for more things to do, like movie theaters, bowling alleys, the Smith Opera House, shopping and dining. Waterloo, to the north also has more attractions. Sampson State Park, a former U.S. Navy base, is in neighboring Romulus. Seneca Lake State Park is in Geneva, and Cayuga Lake State Park is in Seneca Falls (about 15 miles northeast).
