Overview

Waterloo is a town in northwest Seneca County, bordered to the north by Junius, to the east by Seneca Falls, to the south by Fayette and to the west by Ontario County (city of Geneva). Waterloo includes a village also named Waterloo. The town claims to be the birthplace of Memorial Day and as such has a Memorial Day Museum. Waterloo also is known for its enormous outlet shopping mall. The southeastern part of town is near the shoreline of Seneca Lake, which is noted for great lake-trout fishing.


Essentials

Waterloo has a variety of smaller stores and a few large retailers. Some of the smaller stores include Martin’s Country Market and the LTB General Store. For a wider variety of grocery shopping, Waterloo has a Top’s Friendly Markets store on Kingdom Plaza. The closest Wegmans supermarket is on Hamilton Street in Geneva, just 8 miles west. Waterloo also has a Walmart on North Road and the large Waterloo Premium Outlets, which attracts shoppers from throughout the area to outlet stores like Aeropostale, Eddie Bauer, Ann Taylor and Ralph Lauren.



Recreation & Entertainment

Here in the Finger Lakes region, fishing and boating are huge, and Seneca Lake (just west of Waterloo) and Cayuga Lake (just east) are two of the bigger Finger Lakes. Seneca Lake State Park is partly in Waterloo. There are plenty of places to camp, rent a cabin or stay at bed-and-breakfast operations, and the Finger Lakes Wine Trail is nearby.



Transportation & Traffic

The well-traveled and quaint Routes 5 &20 run east-west through Waterloo. Route 96 heads southward from the village of Waterloo.



Pros & Cons

Waterloo is nestled between two of the larger Finger Lakes, so outdoor activities are popular here. The town also has history, laying claim to being the birthplace of Memorial Day. The Waterloo Premium Outlets offers all kinds of shopping that draws people from all over. The busier city of Geneva (in Ontario County) is a short drive west.
