OverviewStockbridge is a town on the eastern edge of central Madison County, bordered to the north by the city of Oneida and partly by Oneida County (town of Vernon), to the east by Oneida County (town of Augusta), to the south by Madison and Eaton, and to the west by Smithfield and Lincoln. Stockbridge includes several hamlets and the village of Munnsville. Stockbridge is a small town of only about 2,000 residents. Most of Stockbridge is rural and the attractions are of the outdoor variety. The enormous Turning Stone Casino and Resort is only 12 miles northeast in Verona, Oneida County, and Vernon Downs Casino, which also features a horse-racing track, is only 6 miles east. A short drive north gets you to Sylvan Beach, on the eastern shore of Oneida Lake. Utica is about 26 miles northeast of Stockbridge.
Local Museums & Landmarks Stockbridge has few historic attractions, but there are plenty of such places nearby. The neighboring city of Oneida (10 miles north) has several sites listed on the National Register of Historic Places, including the Main-Broad-Grove Streets Historic District, Cottage Lawn (home of the Madison County Historical Society), the Mount Hope Reservoir, Oneida Armory, the Oneida Community Mansion House (a “living museum” that celebrates the utopian Oneida Community) and the U.S. Post Office. The Shakowi Cultural Center tells the story of the Oneida Indian Nation and is located on the Oneida Indian Reservation. The village of Canastota, 14 miles northwest of Stockbridge, is the home of the International Boxing Hall of Fame and Museum. The biggest attraction in the area is Turning Stone Casino and Resort in Verona. |
