Overview

Located in northwest Ontario County and bordering Monroe County, Ontario sits on the southern shore of Lake Ontario and is about 15 minutes from Webster and only half an hour from downtown Rochester. The town is the home of the Ginna Nuclear Power Plant, and Bear Creek on Lake Road is popular for stream fishing. Ontario has about 10,000 residents and two major parks, a museum, vineyards, fruit farms and antique shops.


Essentials

For grocery shopping, Ontario has a Tops Friendly Markets and nearby Williamson has a Breen’s IGA. In Webster, just to the west of Ontario, you’ll find a Wegmans grocery and many other stores for shopping, as well as a lot of restaurants. The Ontario Public Library is at 1850 Ridge Road. Post offices are on Furguson Road and, in Ontario Center, at 1544 Ridge Road.



Recreation & Entertainment

Heritage Square Museum on Ontario Center Road is a collection of nine historic 1800s buildings, including a train station, schoolhouse, an apple dry house and a lockup. The place also has the largest sugar maple tree in New York state. Stream fishing is popular at Bear Creek on Lake Road.



Transportation & Traffic

Route 104 is the major east-west highway in this area. Ridge Road (County Road 103) winds through Ontario. Route 350 (Ontario Center Road) and Walworth-Ontario Road are the main north-south roadways. Being a rural area, Ontario’s traffic is not heavy, except on Route 104.



Pros & Cons

Ontario is on the Lake Ontario shoreline, with lakefront scenery on Lake Road and access to great stream fishing. The town is just eight miles from Webster and a quick drive to Rochester. It’s also home to the Ginna Nuclear Power Plant, which helps keep taxes low but might be of concern to some.
