Overview

Wolcott is located in the extreme northeast part of Wayne County, on the south shore of Lake Ontario and bordering Cayuga County. Port Bay has charter fishing, and the town includes the village of Wolcott and the hamlet of Red Creek, which is close to Fair Haven Beach State Park. There’s a fruit farm, a carriage museum and a movie theater here, as well as a vineyard, a historical society museum and a supermarket and stores.


Essentials

The North Rose-Wolcott Central School District, based in Wolcott, serves this area, with three schools. The Wolcott Civic Free library is at 5890 New Hartford St. in Wolcott. The closest hospital is Newark-Wayne Community Hospital in Newark to the southwest, and Auburn Memorial Hospital in Auburn, to the southeast.



Recreation & Entertainment

Fishing, boating, hiking and other outdoor activities are big here. The Palace Theatre, in the village of Wolcott, shows first-run movies. The Wolcott Historical Society Museum is on Jefferson Street. Mills Fruit Farm has a 1950s-style diner. Thorpe Vineyard, on Chimney Heights Boulevard, has been producing wine for more than 20 years. Half a mile away is Chimney Bluffs State Park, which features the most dramatic landscape on the Lake Ontario shoreline.



Transportation & Traffic

Wolcott is just north of Route 104, the main highway in the area, which offers east-west access. County Road 143 – also known as Ridge Road – winds through Wolcott, where, at its center, it is known as Main Street. Route 89 runs north-south to Wolcott.



Pros & Cons

Wolcott is small and lightly populated and popular with outdoor enthusiasts. It’s the home of a one-day wine and jazz festival in August and a harvest festival in the fall. Wolcott is close to Oswego and not far from Syracuse.
